The single biggest factor in the quality of your AI-generated images is not the AI model — it's the quality of your prompt. Two people using the exact same AI tool will get dramatically different results based entirely on how they describe what they want. This guide teaches you the principles, formulas, and techniques used by experienced AI artists to write prompts that consistently produce professional results.
The Anatomy of a Great AI Image Prompt
A well-structured prompt typically contains several key elements, each contributing to the final image in a different way. Think of these as the building blocks you can mix and match:
- Subject — The main focus of the image. Who or what is the primary element?
- Setting / Background — Where does the scene take place?
- Style / Medium — What artistic style or medium should it resemble?
- Lighting — What kind of light is in the scene?
- Camera / Perspective — What angle or focal length?
- Mood / Atmosphere — What feeling should the image evoke?
- Quality modifiers — Keywords that signal high-quality output.
You don't need all of these in every prompt, but including more of them generally produces better results.
The Basic Prompt Formula
For most use cases, this formula works extremely well:
[Art style], [Subject description], [Setting], [Lighting], [Camera angle], [Mood], [Quality keywords]
Example using the formula:
"Photorealistic, young woman with dark hair reading a book, cozy cafe interior with warm ambient lighting, soft diffused window light, medium close-up portrait, peaceful and relaxed mood, 8K, ultra detailed, sharp focus"
Subject Description Tips
The subject is the most important element. Here's how to describe it effectively:
Be specific about appearance
- Weak: "a dog" → Strong: "a golden retriever with a fluffy coat and brown eyes"
- Weak: "a building" → Strong: "a Gothic cathedral with towering spires and ornate stone carvings"
- Weak: "a flower" → Strong: "a single red rose with dewdrops on its petals, macro close-up"
Include action and pose
Describe what the subject is doing: "running through tall grass," "sitting cross-legged on a mountain summit," "mid-flight with wings spread wide." Action creates dynamic, engaging images.
Specify relationships
If there are multiple elements, describe how they relate: "a small child looking up at a giant oak tree," "two knights facing each other across a battlefield."
Lighting — The Most Underused Element
Lighting transforms ordinary prompts into extraordinary images more than almost anything else. Here are lighting descriptions to add to any prompt:
- Golden hour — Warm, soft, orange-gold sunlight from the horizon at sunrise or sunset. Makes everything look cinematic.
- Soft diffused studio lighting — Even, professional light with minimal shadows. Ideal for product shots and portraits.
- Dramatic rim lighting — Light from behind the subject creates a glowing outline. Powerful for portraits and characters.
- Moonlit / night scene — Blue-toned cool light creating mystery and drama.
- Candlelight / fire light — Warm, flickering orange light creating intimacy.
- Overcast natural light — Even, diffused outdoor light. Great for nature photography.
- Neon lights — Colourful artificial light creating a cyberpunk or urban nightlife feel.
- God rays / volumetric lighting — Shafts of light breaking through clouds or trees. Adds dramatic depth.
Camera and Perspective Keywords
Adding camera terminology helps the AI understand framing and composition:
- Portrait, close-up — Face or upper body fills the frame
- Full body shot — Subject visible head to toe
- Wide angle shot — Broad view showing the full scene and environment
- Bird's eye view / top-down — Looking straight down from above
- Low angle shot — Camera positioned low, looking up — makes subjects appear powerful
- Macro photography — Extreme close-up of small subjects like insects, flowers, or textures
- 85mm lens — Classic portrait focal length producing natural perspective
- Fish-eye lens — Ultra-wide with circular distortion
- Aerial / drone shot — High-altitude view of landscapes or cities
Quality Modifier Keywords
These keywords signal to the AI that you want a high-quality, detailed output. Add a selection to any prompt:
- 8K, ultra HD, ultra detailed, hyper detailed
- Sharp focus, high resolution, crisp
- Professional photography, award-winning photo
- Highly detailed, intricate details, masterpiece
- Cinematic, editorial, studio quality
- Trending on ArtStation (for digital art and concept art)
Note: The Enhance Prompt button in IMAGEKA automatically adds a selection of quality modifiers and style tags to your prompt, so you can let it do this step for you.
Using Negative Prompts Effectively
The Negative Prompt field (in Settings) tells the AI what to avoid. This is especially useful for preventing common AI image problems:
Standard negative prompt for most images:
blurry, low quality, low resolution, pixelated, ugly, bad anatomy, distorted, deformed, extra limbs, duplicate, watermark, text, signature, frame, border
For portraits — add: distorted face, extra fingers, bad hands, crossed eyes
For landscapes — add: people, buildings, urban, artificial, HDR, oversaturated
For product shots — add: background clutter, shadows, reflections, logo, text

Common Prompt Mistakes to Avoid
- Being too vague. "Nice picture" or "beautiful image" gives the AI almost nothing to work with. Always describe the subject specifically.
- Contradicting yourself. "Dark bright scene" or "minimalist highly detailed" send conflicting signals.
- Overloading the prompt. Prompts above 200–300 words can overwhelm the model. Be concise but specific.
- Ignoring aspect ratio. If you want a landscape image, select a landscape resolution in Settings. The composition significantly affects the AI's interpretation of your prompt.
- Not iterating. Rarely does the first generation produce a perfect image. Change a word or two and regenerate until you get exactly what you want.
